Sofia was the perfect choice for this fast passed action movie  due to the variety of scenery within a short distance of the main film studio. A 20 Km ride away transports you to scenery that perfectly portrays Mexican Deserts, gorges with rocky outcroppings, farmland and townships.

Local Gipsies donned sombreros, strapped on gun belts and stepped into the extras role of town folk for the film. Nu Boyana Film Studios provided a crew of expert technicians to assist in bringing the magic to the screen.

Eric Roberts told a news conference, attended by Bulgarian media:

” The famous Italian TV series is produced by Ares Film for channel 5, the most important channel in the media sector. It’s a very successful TV series, now in its third year, with Gabriel Garko in the lead role. Garko plays the role of a mafia man named Tonio Fotobrachi. Part of the third season is set in New York, that’s why we moved the scenes to Nu Boyana in Sofia. I play Tom de Maggio, the mafia boss.”

We are also very thankful to Eric Roberts for his kind words about Nu Boyana Film Studios, namely that its back lot is as big as that of Universal Studios, Hollywood’s most famous back lot.

Box Office 3D, the new Italian film by Ezio Greggio and starring Gina Lollobrigida, Ezio Greggio and cast such as: Gigi Proietti, Antonello Fassari, Gianfranco Lannuzzo, Maurizio Mattioli, Biagio Izzo, Anna Falchi, Enzo Salvi and Giorgia Wurth.

The film, comedy compiled of parodies from some of the best selling geners in recent years such as : “The Da Vinci Code”, ” Avatar”, ” The Lord of the Rings”, ” Harry Potter”, ” The Fast and Furious”, “Gladiator” and “Twilight” made use of Nu Boyana’s variety of standing sets to capture all those amazing scenes in the film.

Bulgarian actors and stantman, who appeared in Conan the Barbarian 3D, will attend the official gala premiere on August 24 at Cinema City in the Mall of Sofia.

The film, which was shot in Bulgaria between March 15 and June 15 last year, stars Jason Momoa, Stephen Lang, Ron Perlman and Leo Howard.

Althought much of the film was shot in the capital’s Nu Boyana Film Studios, filming also took place in various other locations throughout Bulgaria. There was Bistritsa, a large village 15 km south of Sofia. Then there was Zlatnite Mostove, the largest stone river on the mountain of Vitosha, only 15 min. drive from Nu Boyana Film Studios.

Other locations used were the Black Sea port of Kavarna ( 64 km northeast of Varna ), Bolata bay (near Kavarna), Pobitite Kamani (a rock phenomenon near Varna) and the Prohodna cave (a karst cave near Lukovit) in northeastern Bulgaria.

We look forward to seeing the film and spotting those areas of beautiful Bulgaria concerned.

Thor Heyerdhal worked on his thesis before leaving for New York to gain recognition for his idea, but the established scientists of the day didn’t believe his theory, and Thor realized that he had to prove it.

Despite his inability to swim and fear of water, Thor set his mind on dangerous sea-faring adventure to sail from Peru to Polynesia on an ancient raft. The story of Kon-Tiki has touched the whole world both in books-translated into over 50 languages and documentary film that won an Oscar in 1951.

The directors Espen Sandberg & Joachim Roenning had commented in between the scenes:

” It is being a great experience to come to Bulgaria. We could use two of the stages for internal shooting and just moving outdoor were able to portray New York in the 40′s. It was easy to find African American and Asian American people as extras. We found everybody here in Bulgaria and a lot of them are also actors. We are very happy with the technical and professional levels at Nu Boyana. We have a very small crew from Norway and the rest are from Bulgaria and they are exellent and professional.”

For such a compilation Nu Boyana Film Studios was the perfect place.The production required sets from Ancient Rom, Italy, New York and beautiful mountain forests. All of which are available on the studio back lot. Also required was a range of super modern stages for internal shooting and a wide variety of costumes, armory and vehicles all provided from the studio catalogue.

Having all these resources in one location helped the production to keep within budget and with the highly professional crew it was successfully completed with perfect timing.
